Listed Building Lime Rendering
Cadw-compliant lime rendering and plastering for Grade I and Grade II listed buildings

Specialist Listed Building Expertise
Listed buildings are among our most precious architectural and cultural assets. In Wales, buildings are listed by Cadw, and any works that affect the character of a listed building require Listed Building Consent. This includes rendering, plastering, repointing, repairs and restoration work. The use of inappropriate materials or techniques on a listed building is not only potentially damaging but is also a criminal offence.
At Lime Rendering, we have extensive experience of working on listed buildings throughout South Wales. We understand the regulatory framework, we respect the significance of each building, and we use only materials and techniques that are appropriate to the age, construction and character of the listed structure.
Understanding the Listing Framework
In Wales, listed buildings are classified into three grades. Grade I buildings are those of exceptional interest, considered to be of national importance. Grade II* buildings are particularly important buildings of more than special interest. Grade II buildings are of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them. All three grades are subject to the same legal protections.
Our experience means we understand the level of documentation, specification and quality of workmanship required. We routinely prepare detailed method statements, material schedules and photographic records to support Listed Building Consent applications.
Materials and Techniques
The materials and techniques we use on listed buildings are guided by best conservation practice, as set out by Cadw, the SPAB, IHBC and other heritage bodies. For lime rendering, we typically use non-hydraulic lime putty or low-strength Natural Hydraulic Lime, depending on the exposure conditions. Aggregates are carefully selected to match the original render.
For lime plastering, we use lime putty plaster or NHL plaster, applied in traditional multi-coat systems. We are experienced in reproducing historic plaster profiles, cornicing, mouldings and decorative plasterwork using lime-based materials.
Case Study Approach
Every listed building project we undertake is approached as a unique case study. We begin with a thorough assessment of the building, its history, its construction and its current condition. We consult available historic records, including listing descriptions, conservation area appraisals and historic photographs. We then work with the building owner, their architect and the conservation officer to develop an appropriate specification.
Removing Cement from Listed Buildings
One of the most common and damaging interventions on listed buildings has been the application of cement-based renders and mortars. Removing cement requires great care and skill, as aggressive removal can cause further damage. We use a combination of hand tools, controlled mechanical removal and careful poulticing to remove cement without harming the original fabric.
Working Together
Our collaborative approach ensures that all parties are in agreement before work commences, minimising the risk of delays, disputes or inappropriate interventions. We are proud of our track record of successful listed building projects and the strong working relationships we have built with conservation officers and heritage professionals throughout South Wales.
