Heritage Lime Rendering
Specialist lime rendering for conservation areas, period properties and historic buildings

Preserving Our Built Heritage
South Wales possesses an extraordinary wealth of historic buildings, from medieval castles and churches to Georgian townhouses, Victorian industrial buildings and traditional Welsh farmsteads. These buildings were constructed using lime-based mortars, renders and plasters, and they require the same materials for their maintenance, repair and restoration. The use of inappropriate modern materials, particularly cement-based products, has caused immense damage to our built heritage over the past century.
At Lime Rendering, we are passionate about heritage conservation. Our team of specialist craftsmen has extensive experience of working on historic and listed buildings throughout South Wales, Bristol and Bath, using traditional lime-based materials and techniques.
Why Lime Is Essential for Heritage Buildings
Historic buildings were designed to manage moisture through evaporation. Their solid walls, lime mortars and lime renders allow water vapour to pass through the building fabric, keeping the structure dry and healthy. When cement-based materials are applied, they seal the wall surface, trapping moisture within the masonry. This causes rising and penetrating damp, salt crystallisation, frost damage, timber decay, mould growth and structural deterioration.
Lime-based materials restore the breathability of the wall, allowing trapped moisture to escape and preventing further damage. They are also softer and more flexible than cement, accommodating the natural movement of the building without cracking.
Our Heritage Services
We offer a comprehensive range of heritage lime rendering and restoration services, including lime rendering and re-rendering of historic facades, lime pointing and repointing of stone and brickwork, lime plastering and re-plastering of period interiors, removal of inappropriate cement renders, structural lime grouting, hot-mixed lime mortar preparation, and specialist conservation repairs.
We work with a wide range of lime products, including non-hydraulic lime putty, Natural Hydraulic Lime in all grades, hot-mixed lime mortars and pozzolanic lime mixes. We are experienced in matching existing lime mortars and renders, including colour-matching using natural earth pigments.
Working with Conservation Officers
We have extensive experience of working within the planning and listed building consent framework. We can prepare detailed method statements, material specifications and work schedules to support listed building consent applications, and we are happy to meet with conservation officers on site to discuss proposed works.
Hot-Mixed Lime Mortars
For the most authentic heritage restoration work, we offer hot-mixed lime mortars. This traditional technique involves mixing quicklime directly with sand and water on site, producing a mortar with exceptional workability, durability and adhesion. Hot-mixed lime mortars have been used in construction for thousands of years and are considered by many conservation specialists to be the most appropriate mortar for use on historic buildings.
Heritage Lime Render Finishes
We offer a wide range of heritage lime render finishes, from rough-cast and harled textures to smooth, trowelled surfaces and lime wash. We can replicate historic finishes using traditional techniques and materials, and we are experienced in matching the colour and texture of existing lime renders on partially rendered buildings.
