Cottage Lime Rendering
Traditional lime rendering for Welsh stone cottages, farmhouses and rural properties

Lime Rendering for Welsh Cottages
Welsh cottages are among the most characterful and beloved buildings in South Wales. From the stone-built farmhouses of the Brecon Beacons and the terraced cottages of the Valleys to the coastal dwellings of Pembrokeshire and the Vale of Glamorgan, these buildings are an integral part of the Welsh landscape and cultural identity. They were built using local stone, rubble, cob and clay, and they were rendered and plastered with lime.
At Lime Rendering, we specialise in lime rendering for Welsh cottages and rural properties. We understand the unique construction methods, challenges and character of these buildings, and we use traditional materials and techniques to ensure our work is sympathetic, durable and beautiful.
Understanding Cottage Construction
Welsh cottages were typically built using locally quarried stone, often uncoursed rubble construction with walls up to two feet thick. The mortar used was invariably lime-based. Many cottages were originally rendered with lime to provide additional weather protection, and this render was often finished with lime wash in traditional colours such as white, cream, pink or ochre.
The walls of Welsh cottages are solid, with no cavity, and they manage moisture through a process of absorption and evaporation. This natural breathing cycle is essential to the health of the building and can only function correctly if the mortar, render and internal plaster are all vapour permeable.
The Problem with Cement on Cottages
During the second half of the twentieth century, many Welsh cottages had their original lime renders replaced with cement-based renders. This well-intentioned but misguided practice has caused enormous damage. Cement is far too hard and impermeable for use on traditional cottage construction. It traps moisture within the walls, leading to persistent dampness, salt crystallisation, frost damage and deterioration of the stone.
If your cottage has cement render and you are experiencing problems with dampness, we strongly recommend having the cement removed and replaced with breathable lime render.
Our Cottage Lime Rendering Service
Our cottage lime rendering service is tailored to the specific needs of each property. We begin with a thorough survey, assessing the condition of the walls and recommending the most appropriate lime render specification. We use NHL renders, typically NHL 3.5 for exposed elevations and NHL 2 for sheltered areas.
Our renders are applied in traditional multi-coat systems, with each coat allowed to cure properly. We pay particular attention to vulnerable areas such as window reveals, door openings, chimney stacks and gable ends. The finished render can be finished with lime wash in a wide range of traditional colours.
Cottage Repairs and Maintenance
In addition to full re-rendering, we offer repair and maintenance services including patch repairs, lime washing, repointing and repair of chimney stacks, copings and other features. Regular maintenance is far more cost-effective than allowing damage to progress to the point where full re-rendering is required.
Working in Rural and Remote Locations
We understand that many Welsh cottages are located in rural and sometimes remote areas. We are experienced in working on rural properties throughout South Wales, including the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains, the Valleys and more remote parts of Monmouthshire and Carmarthenshire. We have the equipment and expertise to work efficiently in these locations.
